The City
Edinburgh, one of the most attractive towns in the United Kingdom, rises from the wide Firth of Forth to a high, rocky pinnacle capped by Edinburgh Castle's stone walls and turrets. The Scottish capital is a cultural and artistic hub, particularly recognised for its festivals. The Edinburgh International Book Festival, which attracts over 1,000 authors, as well as the glistening Christmas Markets and the Edinburgh Fringe, the world's largest arts festival, are among them.
Edinburgh has a melancholy theatricality about it, thanks to its location among crags and hills, as well as its tall stone structures and spires. Edinburgh has served as a military stronghold, an independent country's capital, and a centre of intellectual activity. The city has always reinvented itself, despite the vicissitudes of fate. It is still a key centre for banking, law, tourism, education, and cultural concerns, and it is the seat of the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Executive. 102 square miles is the size of the council area (264 square km). In 2001, the city had a population of 431,393 people; the council area had a population of 476,626 people; in 2011, the city had a population of 459,366 people; and the council area had a population of 476,626 people.
